Hi Coach – sorry, I didn’t mean about the drill but more of keeping a high elbow technique as it is so incredibly hard to do this while swimming in open, choppy water.
- Is it that it releases tension on your shoulders when you are in the recovery part of it and have a high elbow to help with this?
- Is it to also keep a high elbow for your catch…

Hi all,
Would you be interested in attending a Master Swim class with me? I know some of you may find it intimidating but trust me, you will get a lot of useful tips from it.
We all work hard on our swim technique but we dont really know if we are doing it correctly as no one is watching us and providing feedback. Therefore, I think it will be…[Read more]

Coach/Ryan – amazing answers, THANK YOU!
Coach said the magic word: overthinking. Gosh, I do that with everything I do, GUILTY!
However, I think it is also extremely important to keep this in mind, especially if doing half and/or full Ironman races (or in general) – you want to learn how to use your muscles efficiently while biking so you can…[Read more]

One of my struggles – which brings a question: Is there a difference on the stroke between triathletes and regular swimmers?
If you know me, I LOVE reading and watching videos to improve my technique. I follow Global Triathlon Network on both Facebook and YouTube and they constantly talk about the different techniques used during triathlons and…[Read more]

Thanks, Coach, for further explaining.
I normally put my heart rate monitor strap on before the swim portion of a race and take off the monitor part – then when I am done with the swim as I am getting ready to go biking, I put it back on so I can keep track of my heart rate.

Great reminder, Ryan. I have made the mistake of not changing my trainer tire when riding outside, but thankfully, nothing has happened.
This reminds me of mentioning the different type of tires for certain terrain – keep an eye on the weather on race day and ensure you have the right tire for it.

Hi all,
I recently upgraded trainers and I am selling my “old” one – I have only had it for 2 years now.
- Saris CycleOps Orginal Magnetic trainer
- 5 speed selection (resistance)
- Paid $120 for the trainer, then got the stand for the front tire and the trainer skewer which came up to around $140
- I’ll sell it to you for $100
If…[Read more]

Justin – another thing to keep in mind.. you dont want to worry about your HR when swimming, it wont be accurate. This is why the swim baseline test is set to find our pace time per 100m, and not our HR threshold.
Hope I explained that correctly 🙂

Coach,
I know most of this information can be provided by a bike fitter, but even though I got my bike fitted, I sometimes struggle with this. I think I have found that sweet spot by now, but I feel like we don’t really talk so much about our pedaling/bike training as much (aside from nutrition).
For instance – is there guidance on the angle…[Read more]

Oh yeah… this happened to me once – thankfully during a training bike ride and I struggled changing that back tire. It was a good practice for sure.

Justin – Hains Point is the perfect place for this, good option – hope it is not too windy as that might make it a bit more difficult and your test may or may not be as accurate. However, this is a test you can retake at any time.
Your cadence and speed sensor should help with this, especially with your HR threshold. For instance, I know my max…[Read more]

Katie – this is also a great opportunity to learn how to change your back tired, especially if this happened during a race. I highly suggest getting a training tire and changing your current one so you get to practice – trust me, it takes a lot longer than changing your front tire 🙂

It really depends on the type of tire you purchase. My racing tires are completely different than my trainer back tire. Its quite annoying having to change tires every time I race, but because I do most of my riding indoors during the winter, it doesn’t really bother me as much.
However, if you have a smooth tire and you go out biking after its…[Read more]

Like the Training Guide mentions, you also want to do these tests on a flat surface – but also doing them on a trainer is very helpful. You can get a power meter from Amazon depending on what kind of watch you have.
Don’t have either? Best time to shop for them – trust me, they will come handy.

What an amazing opportunity to train on this course.. I just took a look at the elevation of the bike course and it seems pretty challenging.
Most of us don’t include a lot of hill workouts when biking, so obviously racing on this course will be challenging if you don’t. Take a look at the elevation of the bike portion here and consider going to…[Read more]

Just like coach mentioned, don’t let what I paid scare you off. Thank you, coach, for all the helpful tips. It is important to emphasize that no one should be trying something new this week. Stick to what you’ve been doing this whole time.
- If you havent practiced swimming with a wetsuit and they are allowed this weekend, don’t wear it, you will have a terrible swim and might drop out – trust me, I did this…
